South of that are the rolling, fertile Pampas, which are rich in agriculture and sheep- and cattle-grazing and support most of the population.

Genetics/genomics research is conducted in several centers, such as the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Buenos Aires, the Instituto de Investigaciones de Ingenieria Genetica y Biologia Molecular, the Fundacion Leloir, the Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Celular, and the Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario.
