Argentina is located in southeastern South America. Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world. The country is divided into twenty-three provinces and one autonomous city. Argentina is an independent state and a republic which occupies much of the southern part of South America. Argentina is rich in resources, has a well-educated workforce and is one of South America's largest economies. Up until about the mid-20th century, much of Argentina's history was dominated by periods of internal political conflict between Federalists and Unitarians and between civilian and military factions.

Argentina is sharing land borders with Chile across the Andes to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north; Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the South Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Drake Passage to the south. Geographically Argentina is divided into seven regions they are Northwest, Mesopotamia, Gran Chaco, Sierras Pampeanas, Cuyo, Pampas and Patagonia. Argentina is also bordered by Bolivia and Paraguay on the north, and by Uruguay and Brazil on the east. The northern area is the swampy and partly wooded Gran Chaco, bordering Bolivia and Paraguay. South of that are the rolling, fertile Pampas, which are rich in agriculture and sheep- and cattle-grazing and support most of the population.

Argentina’s research is majorly focused on Single-gene disorders, Chromosomal anomalies, Neural tube defects, Non communicable diseases, Genetic testing, DNA testing etc. Biomedical research in Argentina has a long tradition in academic centers with three Nobel prizes in this field. The National Council for Scientific and Technological Research has existed for 50 years. The Ministry of Health funds public health research projects, including in genetics/genomics. Genetics/genomics research is conducted in several centers, such as the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Buenos Aires, the Instituto de Investigaciones de Ingenieria Genetica y Biologia Molecular, the Fundacion Leloir, the Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Celular, and the Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario.
