Brazil is the fourth country in the world in number of patients with diabetes. The diabetes epidemic affects most countries across the world and is increasing at alarming rates in Latin America. Nearly 12 million individuals have diabetes in Brazil, and the current prevalence ranges from 6.3% to 13.5%, depending on the region and the diagnostic criteria. In 2000, there were 4.6 million patients with diabetes in Brazil, making it the country with the eighth highest diabetes prevalence rate in the world. In Brazil’s 11 largest cities, between 5.7% and 16.2% of the population has diabetes. By 2030, the total number of cases is projected to reach 11.3 million.
