India is a democratic country situated in South Asia. In terms of area, the country stands seventh in the world and in terms of population, it ranks second next to china with over 1.2 billion people. India is home to four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It has 29 states and 7 union territories. The country is known for unity in diversity and diversity in unity.

India is located northern side of the equator between 8°4' and 37°6' north latitude and 68°7' and 97°25' east longitude. It has a total area of 3,287,263 km2. From north to south, India measures 3,214 km and from east to west, 2,933 km. It has a land frontier of 15,200 km and a coastline of 7,517 km. Indian peninsula is surrounded by Indian Ocean on south, Arabian sea on south west and Bay of Bengal on south east.

India is a developing country with average growth rate of 7%. The Indian economy ranks seventh by nominal GDP and third by purchasing power parity (PPP) n the world. It is listed in G20 major economies. From last quarter of 2014, India has become fastest growing major economy. Maharashtra with an annual GDP of USD 220 billion is the wealthiest state in India and it contributes 12% to the Indian economy followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

The Indian government has set several action plans to promote R&D. In its 2015-16 union budget, Indian government announced idea to set up National Institution to Transforming India (NITI) to give boost to scientific inventions with the involvement of entrepreneurs and researchers. India is investing largely to set up high end research centers and is expected to witness large growth in coming years in engineering, agriculture, pharma and IT sectors.

There are twenty million people in India suffering from different kinds of kidney diseases. The Indian Society of Nephrology was founded in 1970 to encourage clinical and experimental research and to advance knowledge and study pertaining to the field of Nephrology. The main research interests of the society include glomerulonephritis, problems in transplant recipients, lupus nephritis, strategies to retard CKD progression etc. Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre established in 1981 is one of the world’s largest institutes engaged in service, research and education concerning nephrology. Some of the best hospitals in India for kidney treatments are Apollo hospitals (Chennai), AIMS (Delhi), Manipal hospital (Bangalore), Christian medical college (Vellore). Other popular hospitals that attract international patients are Fortis, Max hospital, Wockhardt Hospitals Group in association with Harvard medical international.
